Better Than Bin is a free Australian service that helps you figure out what to do with things you no longer need — before they end up in landfill. Whether it's a broken toaster, a stack of old jeans, a phone you've upgraded from, or a piece of furniture that doesn't fit your new home, the search suggests a practical next step.
Our advice covers the full range of outcomes: selling for cash, trading in for store credit, donating to charity, dropping off at a recycling facility, council kerb-side pickup, and — only when nothing else is available — general waste disposal. The recommendation logic is designed to prioritise financial return, then reuse or free recycling, then responsible disposal. Availability and eligibility still need to be confirmed with the provider.
Most Australians want to do the right thing with their unwanted items, but don't know where to start. A search for "how to recycle my old TV" can return pages of outdated information, broken links, or council websites that are hard to navigate. Meanwhile, op shops are overwhelmed with donations they can't sell, and soft plastics programs have come and gone.
We built Better Than Bin to make that first step simpler: one search that returns plain-language general guidance, with location information used where the system supports it.
Type in a household item — "old jeans", "printer cartridges", "yoga mat", or "used candles". The service first checks a fixed database of common-item rules. Those entries are manually maintained rather than generated at search time.
The database currently contains about 100 item rules, with keywords that allow each rule to match several searches. It covers areas such as:
If there is no database match, an AI model generates an answer automatically. That answer is shown without prior human review and is then stored automatically in a learned-items cache. It may be reused when a later query matches its stored item name. Cached AI answers are not the same as manually maintained database entries and are not guaranteed to have been reviewed.
Fixed database entries refer to disposal pathways and named services such as council collections, product-stewardship programs, retailers, charities, and specialist recyclers. They are written as short, actionable summaries, not as a complete directory of every provider.
Search results do not currently include item-level citations, publication dates, or a guarantee that a program has not changed. AI answers are produced from instructions to use Australian programs and any location supplied; they do not perform a live check of provider or council websites before answering.
The service is intended for all Australian states and territories. Entering a postcode or suburb supplies state and, where available, council context. AI answers can use that context, while fixed database answers are generally national or state-level. There are limited council-specific overrides, and location can also be used to build a nearby map search. This is not a complete live directory of council services.
Recycling rules, accepted materials, fees, opening hours, rewards, and program availability can change and can differ by council or provider. Recommendations may be incomplete, outdated, or wrong, especially when they are AI-generated.
Treat every result as general guidance. Before travelling or disposing of an item, confirm the current rules directly with your council, recycler, retailer, charity, or other service provider. Take extra care with batteries, chemicals, medicines, gas cylinders, and other hazardous items.
